Agapé FC will be starting their 10th season in the Down Area League this year, and it will be their 3rd season competing in the Premier Division, after a record breaking 2009/10 season winning the Division 1 title having not lost a league game during the whole campaign.
Agapé won 25 of their 28 games, and drew 3, scoring over 100 goals in all competitions and breaking records for most games without losing and games won in a row. Agapé will be hoping to consolidate their position in the Premier Division after a disappointing season the last time they gained promotion in 2005.
Agapé FC is the brainchild of founder Sam Watterson. Sam attended Agapé Fellowship Church in Belfast and it was at the Church Youth Club that had a vision of a football team for the local lads. On Saturday afternoons lads would kick a ball around the Church hall, and these boys would become the nucleus of the side, and so Agapé FC was formed. Although officially formed in May 1997, most of the original line-up played as a team together on Boxing Day 1996 against a team from Orangefield Presbyterian Church in a friendly. Agapé won 3-2, with Ricky Fitzsimmons, who's still with us, scoring the winner.
Agapé took to the field in September 1997 against Castle Utd 3rd's in Bangor in their first official game after joining the Irish Churches League that summer. The team that took the field had an average age of 17. After almost 3 years of management and leadership of the team Sam Watterson passed away suddenly leaving the boys and family members shocked and saddened. Although Sam is no longer with us his influence and inspiration still lives on in the team, as his son Neale taking over as manager. Before Sam’s death, it was his desire that Agapé FC played in the Down Area Winter League, and his dream has since become a reality.
