Wellingborough FC Phoenix evolved from a junior team many years ago. At age16 they decided to enter senior football. In our first season the lads (mixed in with only a few real adults) performed very well and despite losing the majority of our games (albeit by small margins), still managed to give most teams a decent game and not finish bottom of the league. We won 3 and drew 2 giving us 11 points in total. Our highlight was an 8-1 beating of Dunhill Utd Res.
At the end of the 2009-10 season most of the 'boys' went their separate ways. Some to play at a better standard, some to go to work or college. Some to have sex with women.
From the original junior team, only Karl Gates is still with us but the club managed to bring in a decent number of players with a bit more experience and despite a total rebuild, we started to gel together and in the 2010/11 season acheived promotion plus a quarter final cup run despite not winning a league game until January!. The team is built around spirit as opposed to ability (just as well!), prides itself on being run properly (and won an award for this) whilst respecting our opponents and officials as opposed to issuing death-threats at every opportunity. We are pobably too nice for Sunday football but our aim is to play as well as we can and make friends along the way. This was also proven recently after an old couple on a camp-site complemented us on our behaviour following the (now legendary) World Tour 2011 (to see Norm's mate of Great Yarmouth). We play our home games on Sunday at Croyland Park, kick off 10.30. You can't miss us! If you want more information contact Wellingborough Phoenix via facebook. For the 2011/2012 Chris Smith and Dan Hollis are taking on most of the responsibilites although 100% supported by Sir Dan Beaman who reamins integral to the club and not forgetting ageing veteran Graham "this is definitley my last season" Gates who still thinks he's getting a game now and again! |
