Guildford Saints - A Short History
Guildford Saints F.C. has a proud tradition of helping develop young footballing talent around the Burpham and Merrow areas of Guildford since 1983. There are approximately 250 children registered with the club aged between 6 and 17 years of age.
The senior team has been running for several years with John Thornton at the helm. However in the 1999/2000 with dwindling numbers a merger between Saints and St Peters Old boys saw a steady progress finishing Runners up in Division 2 in their first season, subsequently gaining promotion to the top flight. Since then Saints have had mixed success coming runners up to Spartak in their first season and can note the following successes.
However once more due to dwindling squad numbers and poor performances the club nearly folded at the beginning of 2004/2005. However an injection of interest and with a new Manager on board (Nick Darnell) Saints turned a terrible start to 2004/2005 into successful season from which the club has never looked back having finished mid table and losing in the Semi final of the County Cup.
Saints have continued their improvement and recorded some notable successes having won the 1st division league trophy in back to back years in 05/06 and 06/07 seasons, winning the double in 05/06.
Saints could not quite continue there triumphs in the 07/08 season and finished 4th managing to make the semi finals of the Twyford but eventually falling to short.
Saints 2008/09 season continued in the same vain as the previous season with some great memorible performances and some lacklustre mediocre ones. The end of the season proved to be the best part of the season with Saints unbeaten for the last 6 games of the campaign and finishing in a creditable 5th place. Saints will look to improve on that in 2009/10 and try and rediscover the form which took them to a back to back championships. |
