Home ground: Fernhurst Drive Highdown Rovers play in the Worthing and District Football League Premier Division. They were formed in 2004 by two friends, with the Chairman Lee Robinson (Tommo) + Secretary Glenn Belchamber (Hoover) making the effort to start up a club run by players for the players. It was the events of the 2003/04 season that sparked Tommo into "Must get away from this old team" mode and what better place to go than your very own team?! So one beered up conversation down the local one evening eventually turned into Highdown Rovers. A very generous donation from The Spotted Cow pub in Angmering helped out big time, and we secured a sponsor which pulled out at the last minute, but Tommo's persistence paid dividends and eventually GSG Cargo came up with the cash. The only other problem was players. Word of mouth soon got round and we eventually sorted out around 15 players all from friends of friends. To begin with, we just wanted to get a team together, but the quality of players that soon came along changed all that! We had ex-county players and one who claimed he'd played Ryman Premier! But mainly we had a few regular players and a few that had never been in a team before. Hard work by all concerned in both pre-season training and regular training soon changed those into regular, good quality players.
We pride ourselves on team spirit and togetherness, and hard work. We have built a reputation for being a team which plays to the bitter end of every game and as such have pulled off some late results which is to the credit of each and every player. Not content with merely winning games, Rovers look to win games with a good attitude by playing a good passing game of football, and earning every victory with determination and effort.
Gaining back to back to back promotions, we now play in the Premier Division and have started a reserve team which is looking very strong this year. |
