Kelma F.C was formed in 1997 after Eugene Tierney left F2 formerly Royal Liver Reserves for whom he had played and managed for the previous 15 years ( managed for 3 years ).
A team called Hoylake Ford had dropped out of the 3rd division without playing a game so Eugene stepped in at the last minute and formed a team which took over their fixtures and Kelma F.C was born.
The team consisted of around 5 old heads who Eugene had played with previously (two of them from F2) and the rest was made up of Eugene's son Simon's friends who were aged between 16 - 18 at the time. The young team struggled to find their feet and weren't up to much in that first season and the club finished 3rd bottom of the league with a record of P 33, W 3, D 4, L 26.
The name Kelma came from a Real Madrid shirt Simon was wearing at the time the club was thinking of a name. The madrid top was made by Kelme, so the E was changed for an A and the rest is history.
Our original sponsors consisted of Bogan's Carpets as Eugene knew the manager of the store and these have loyally remained sponsors until a few years ago when unfortunately they hit troubles and couldnt afford to keep us on, fortunately for us in steps Phil Roberts and secures us a sponsorship deal with Mercedes Roadrange who he worked for, This season sees MT Cribs to sponsor us.
The First Match
In the first match on 06/09/1997 there were 3 players in the squad who still play now, Simon Tierney, Andy Leith and Billy Coburn ( Barring his injured knee) whilst Eugene also played in the match. The first ever scorer was Tim Hayes who became captain a few years later. We lost the game 4-3 to a Seven Stiles youth team who eventually went on to win the division. |
