Knottingley Albion play in the Selby League First Division. It all started back in 1999 when a group of lads played 5 a side at Knottingley High School on a Tuesday night. One Tuesday after the game , Scott Forman floated the idea of having there own league side. They were called Winston AFC,the pub were they were based. In there 1st season ,they finished 6th in the Selby + District League . For the 2000/01 season Winston AFC moved to the Greenbottle but retained the name Winston AFC,that year Winston AFC finished 5th. The next season Winston AFC were promoted to the 1st division, and moved to the Steampacket Inn,Winston AFC now became Knottingley Albion. Albion came 2nd in the 1st Division. In 2002/03 Albion again came 2nd but beat Champions Airedale at Hambleton 3-0 to win the Selby League Challenge Cup. The next season Albion finished a disappointing 4th after a few players left but the following season, the players returned with some new ones and Albion again finished 2nd after pushing Pollington for much of the season. In 2005/06 Craig Alexander returned to the helm but injuries and suspensions blighted there season,as they finished 5th.Alexander continued as Albion put a decent run together but bad luck with injuries again cost Albion dear, They eventually finished 3rd on goals difference behind Riley's A. The season did end on a good note, When Albion defeated South Milford 3-2 in the St Andrew's cup final at Hambleton. |
