Welcome to London XI's official website. We hope you enjoy browsing and no doubt laughing at some of our bowling-shoe ugly players. A little bit of club background for you......
Formed in June 2009 by Luke Bellord, Pete Walsh and Alex McNamara, it was thought that a name with a bit of weight behind it was needed to signify just what an historic moment this would be. After minutes, nay, hours of research and head banging, it was decided that in a move not too dissimilar to what the church try and flog week in, week out, we would raise a team from the afterlife and announce the second coming of a greater force. And so LONDON XI FC was re-born. Agreed, it's yet to achieve the following of the famous bearded one, but we signed a hairy faced centre half at the start who just happened to be a carpenter and now he's vanished off the face of the Earth. Coincidence? Maybe, or maybe it's a sign from above.
The London XI was an association football representative team, specially created to take part in the 1955-58 edition of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the precursor of today's UEFA Cup. It was decided to create a team especially for the tournament, using the best players from each London-based club. Membership of the team varied considerably between matches. The London XI, managed by Chelsea chairman Joe Mears, reached the final of the cup, after coming top of a group that included special XI teams from Basel and Frankfurt, and then beating Lausanne Sports. London lost over two legs in the final however, to none other than Barcelona..... and then promptly went to sleep, for 51 years.
We play our home games at Westminster Schools, Tamworth Lane, Mitcham and are currently in Division 1 of the Sportsmans Senior Sunday League. Please email us at londonxifc@hotmail.co.uk if you have any questions. |
