Saints have been Downs League Champs 8 times and also won the Norman Hardy Cup on 4 occasions during the most successful spell in the club's history. Many of the players of that era remain associated with the activities.
The club was launched in 1968 as St Andrews Park in the Avon League while based at Pen Park School, before changing the name to Saints Old Boys on joining the Downs League 3 years later.
Promotions to higher levels quickly followed in 1972, 1974 and 1975, when the team also reached the Norman Hardy final for the first time, only to lose to the all-conquering St Gabriels.
A reserve side was added in 1977 and immediately won the Div 4 title, then the first team set the corks popping by becoming Div 1 champs, to herald the period of outstanding success.
The Championship victory was repeated in 1982 then, for 5 successive seasons from 1985-1990, which equalled a record achieved by the outstanding Union Jack team of the 1920s.
As Saints expanded, an A side was introduced in 1989 but disbanded 3 years later, followed by the Res, who dropped out in 1995.
The first team then went down to replace the Reserves in Div 3, becoming known as The Horse + Groom when based at the City Centre pub.
The team won the Div 3 championship and the All Saints Cup in 1996 then gained promotion again to Div 1 the following year, only to be relegated in 2001.
After a change of direction, the name of the club reverted to Saints OB in Div 2, and promotion followed in 2009.
Saints are now based at The Mouse in Westbury-on-Trym, where after-match entertainment is served up by hospitable landlords Elaine + Billy.
The First Team finished in a respectable mid-table position under new manager Marc Trafford. A summer influx of players should see a lot of new faces at Saints, and with Marc handing the reigns back to Graham Edgell a new look team is taking shape. 2010/11 also saw stalwart Edgell reach his 1,000th game for the club. |
