Scholes Athletic Football Club play in the Heavy Woollen Gate Sunday Alliance League Division One.
They were formed in 1922 playing as Scholes Old Boys Association Football Club after the local community had purchased the land in order to use it for cricket and “other games”. The land in question is at New Popplewell Lane, just behind the Rising Sun pub and is part of Scholes Cricket and Athletic Club.
More recent history has seen Athletic return to Division 1 of the League following a successful promotion in 2009/2010. A semi-final place in the Gate Challenge Cup and a quarter-final place in the Brooke Butler District Cup meant last year was the most successful season in the Club’s recent past. It also saw the emergence of the Scholes Athletic Supporters, affectionately known as the SAS in turn leading to Athletic adopting a certain motto.
Athletic play their home games at New Popplewell. Changing facilities (including showers) and a bar for post-match debate and drinks are adjacent to the pitch. There are adequate parking facilities for visiting teams and spectators, and a viewing gallery on the pavilion’s balcony should the weather turn nasty and shelter is needed.
The players, staff and management at Scholes Athletic would like to thank you for visiting our website and welcome you to New Popplewell.
