Sporting Kingfisher after beginning life in the South Birmingham Sunday Football League moved to the Coronation Football League + Alliance in 2009. They were formed in 2007 taking the name of the nearby Kingfisher pub in Rover Drive, Smiths Wood. The club have now returned to Lanchester Park located adjacent to Lanchester Way, Smiths Wood, after a year in exile at Bluebell Drive in nearby Chelmsley Wood due to construction work.
The 2007-2008 début season ended with a South Birmingham Division One league position of 8th and a Quarter Final appearance in both the Len Ward + Christopher Moore cup competitions.
The 2008-2009 season saw an improvement of one league place, but early exits from both cup competitions.
In 2009-2010 Sporting Kingfisher made a great entry into the Coronation by securing the Runners up spot in Alliance Division One + thus gaining promotion at the first attempt. The star player of that season was Richard Wilson; voted both the Players Player of the season + the Managers Player of the year. The top goal scorer award went to Ryan Kings for the second consecutive year. Daniel Tomlinson deservedly collected the Club Man trophy.
The 2010-2011 season saw the club continue its climb up the league after securing a second successive promotion following a third place finish. For a long spell from the turn of the year up until the final couple of weeks of the season it appeared that Kingfisher could be destined for the title itself as they led the table, but it was not to be as 3 defeats in the last 5 games killed the dream. There was further disappointment when the club were defeated in the Semi-Final of the Senior cup despite a vastly superior attempts on goal ratio to their opponents Shenley Green.
The end of season awards went to; Simon Volante, voted the Players Player of the season. Barry Hawkins won the Managers Player of the year award + claimed the top goal scorer trophy. James Kings was the right full nominee for the Club Man trophy. |
