Formed in 1892 the club spent it's early years in the lower intermediate leagues winning the Sussex Junior Cup in 1902 and the Vernon Wentworth Cup in 1934. The club gained senior status in 1964 joining the SCFL and playing in Div 2 until 1978 when they were promoted to Div 1 as champions. During the 1980's Steyning were one of the top non-league clubs in Sussex and spent 8 years in Div 1, only once finishing outside the top 4. They did the double twice during this time winning the league and league cup in 84/85 and 85/86. They then joined the Wessex League, during which time they won the Senior Cup in 1989 playing at the old Goldstone ground. STFC returned to the SCFL in 1993 in Div 2 but were relegated to Div 3 in 1997. At the end of the 2001/02 season they were promoted back to Div 2 and also won the Vernon Wentworth Cup. Early in 2010 the club finally gained Chartered Standard status thanks to some very hard work done within the club. With new management and club input they hope 2010/11 is the start of a new era at STFC. |
