Wem Town Football Club's first team play in the West Midland (Regional) League Division One since gaining a second successive promotion in 2010. We are based at the Butler Sports Ground in Wem, a ground we share with our local rivals Shawbury United.
The earliest records show that Wem were members of the Shropshire + District League in 1897. Other members were Wellington Town, Wrockwardine Wood, St. Georges, Newport, Ironbridge, Market Drayton, Whitchurch and Leominster.
In the seasons 1936-1939, Wem won the Shropshire Junior Cup for four years in succession, a record that will never be broken as the winners now have to compete in the Challenge Cup the next year.
For many years, Wem were members of the Whitchurch and District League and the most successful season was 1960/61 where we were League winners, League Cup winners, Ethelston Cup winners and Powell Cup winners. One of the players, Michael Ruscoe, attained the distinction of playing every match during the season.
Wem have won the Ethelston Cup 7 times, with the most recent victory being in 2007. Wem have won the Powell Cup 3 times, 1960/61, 1996/7 and again in 2009/10.
Wem left the Whitchurch and District League and joined the Shropshire County League, briefly leaving this league for a six-year spell in the Banks West Midland League.
Wem by choice rejoined the County League. where we remained there until 2008/9, when we won the league gaining promotion to the West Midland Regional League. Following a successful first season back at this level, Wem were promoted to Division 1 in 2009/2010 after finishing second behind Black Country Rangers. |
