Club Details

The club began life as Wigmore Athletic who were founder members of Division 2 of the Sussex County League in 1952. Within a season they had won promotion to Division 1, where they remained for 13 seasons before suffering relegation in 1966. Within two seasons Wigmore had won promotion back to the top division as runners-up to Whitehawk, only to be immediately relegated. The club then took five years before they lifted the Division 2 title for a second time in 1973/74, and the County League Cup (now the John O’Hara League Cup) the following season. The club also finished third in Division 1 that season - their best ever finish. Ultimately though, the club struggled at the higher level and were relegated again in 1978 after finishing bottom; remaining in Division 2 until amalgamating with Southdown and changing their name to Worthing United in 1988 after being relegated to Division 3.

Worthing United returned to Division 2 in 1990 as champions remaining there, with highest finishes being 5th in 92 and 93 before season 2003/04 saw the club finish as runners-up behind Littlehampton Town as well as finishing runners up in the Division 2 Cup against the same team.

The club’s first season in Division 1 saw them finish 14th. The following 4 seasons saw fights with relegation, finishing one place off the relegation places in 05/06 + 07/08 as well as an 18th place finish with a relegation reprieve due to Division 2 clubs not having required ground grading. 08/09 saw the club go down as they finished bottom after an awful campaign. In 2009 the club appointed Jason Rutherford and Fred Proto and they took the club to runner up spot in County 2 and into a promotion place only for the club to be turned down by the County Leagues ground grading committee. With Rutherford and Proto leaving due to the lack of promotion the club appointed Dominic Di Paola as manager assisted by Ian Browne, Adam Westwood and Jan Miller from Clymping for the start of the 2010/11 season.
