A1 Sports and Performance 2-4 AFC Glass July 27, 2008 - Friendly Previous match | Results list | Next match
Glass started their 08/09 season with a friendly in the blazing heat against A1 Sports and Performance at Henbury. With a hastily arranged fixture, manager Lee was unable to field a full strength side so fielded trialists Dan Silcock, Simon Taylor and Chris England. With A1 having a squad of 37 and the Glass arriving with 11 (and Nay-10) it looked as if they had their work cut out. A1 started brightly, but the glass took the lead when a Tony Smith throwing bounced around in the box and James Lee headed over the keeper. Stuart Lee started in goal and on 15mins his unfortunate own goal enabled A1 to get back on level terms. A hard hit free kick which Lee actually tipped onto the bar came down and hit him on the knee. Trialist Silcock was enjoying the midfield battle with a very tidy opposite number and along with Tonkin they looked very strong. Glass went 2-1 up when a nice flick from James Taylor sent Lee racing clear and he made no mistake with his left foot. A1 had the chance to equalise again when a dodgy penalty was given for handball but own goal villan turned penalty hero when Stuart Lee dived to his left and tipped the ball clear. Half time couldnt come soon enough for some of the Glass players, namely Tony Smith whos bald head at this point was as red as the stripes on his shirt. The second half started quickly for the Glass as England was sent racing clear but could shank his shot wide. Some shoddy defending by the Glass, naming no names (Wallington and Sampson) and a good finish brought A1 back into the game. Apart from this the make shift defence of Smith, Wallington, Sampson and Long had looked very steady but lack of communication almost cost the Glass. Simon Taylor had some nice touches up front and brother James should have scored to make it 3-2 but his shot hit the post. Glass took the lead for the 3rd time with the best move of the match. England played in Tonkin to out wide and his cross was inch perfect and Lee completed his hatrick with a bullet header. With the heat taking its toll, Lee introduced Nathan Irwin for Tony Smith and Chris Buxton who had just returned from 2 night in woolacombe for Chris England. Both teams tired and Glass added a 4th when James Taylor flicked on for James Lee and he passed to Irwin who did his best to miss but put the result beyond doubt. It was a good run out for the Glass and trialists Taylor and England did very well on their debuts. However, it will be Dan Silcock who take the plaudits with his performance in centre midfield. His first game in 5 years, he never looked like he had been away. Energy, tackling and some good passing will certainly mean he will get a one year deal. Lee said 'I had my doubts I must admit, i thought Dan and Tonkin in centre mid would be deadly, but they both performed very well. Dan is over the age of 20 and our policy says that players that age will only get a one year deal. All 3 of them infact did well and will certainly sign forms'. Goal summary: 15 min - James Lee (5/10) 36 min - James Lee (6/10) 57 min - James Lee (8/10) 76 min - Nathan Irwin (6/10) |
