Match report:

Wednesday 24th August 2011 – WLP

This game was played on a hard, but wet, surface after torrential downpours of rain during the afternoon. Hallen cruised to a three goal lead by half-time, a score-line that flattered them rather, but then wasted second half chances and had to go through a jittery last ten minutes before being sure of the three points.

The first opportunity fell to the visitors after ten minutes due to hesitancy in the home defence only for the shot to be struck wide. This action was followed by Bennett’s alertness giving him a chance but was unlucky to see the ball come back off the post as he shot across the keeper. The speed of Hallen’s three front runners continued to cause panic in the Corsham defence and they took the lead after fifteen minutes when Cook did well to lay the ball sideways into the path of Collett whose side-footed shot from the edge of the box went under the body of the diving keeper. Collett and Bennett then went close before Collett converted his second in added time as he pounced in a crowded goalmouth from eight yards. But there was still time for another before the whistle for the break as Collett collected a long ball out of defence before hitting a good cross-field pass to O’Donovan who stayed calm to produce the perfect finish as he slid the ball past the advancing keeper.

Two minutes into the second half, Bennett was upended on the angle of the penalty area and up stepped Collett to complete his hat-trick as his strike hit the back of the net before the keeper moved. 54 minutes saw the first shot on target from the visitors as Yeo dived to his left to make a comfortable save, followed by an attempt by Hallen being pushed onto the post by the keeper. Collett then went close before failing to convert a good chance, followed by a “goal” from O’Donovan being struck off for offside. Then we had the jittery ten minutes that was started when a Corsham shot from distance received a wicked deflection from a defender giving Yeo no chance as the ball entered the net. Two minutes later, a cross came into the Hallen box where Nelmes needlessly pushed an opponent in the back and the Hallen keeper was sent the wrong way from the spot. As we awaited the final whistle, we witnessed a tremendous save from Yeo to stop the ball entering the net but the move was called back to an offside infringement.
