IT WAS JUST NOT MEANT TO BE MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 HALLEN 0 This was always going to be a difficult game for Hallen to win against a team who play at a higher level, but how close they ran them. It was an enjoyable afternoon against a sporting team, friendly supporters and spent in the pleasant company of the Mangotsfield chairman. These friendly rival supporters were the first to admit that Hallen should have been awarded a stone wall penalty and in the sporting and honest words of Phil Bater, the Mangotsfield manager, when speaking on Radio Bristol – “Hallen did enough to leave with a replay”. It was nice to have our beliefs confirmed as we move on wishing our hosts the best of luck against Frome in the next round. Hallen started the game kicking up the slope with O’Donovan putting over a good cross that just eluded Bennett before our hosts lifted an effort over the bar. In the early sparring, the combination of O’Donovan and Bennett looked dangerous on many occasions but was being broken down by competent goalkeeping. It was twenty-five minutes before Mangotsfield threatened the Hallen goal for a second time but the situation was dealt with by Lippiatt as he headed the ball clear from a dangerous cross. Collett then went close on a couple of occasions, but in added time, Mangotsfield should have taken the lead when a miss-kicked centre lobbed over the head of goalkeeper Yeo and with the ball bouncing back off the underside of the bar, the Mangotsfield striker failed to convert from six yards. The home side came out of the traps for the second half making Yeo perform heroics to complete a double save from close range shots but he had no chance on 51 minutes when the ball was hooked into the far corner of the net through a crowded area. Seven minutes later, a Mangotsfield player was lucky to only see yellow when he pushed an opponent to the floor, and was wisely substituted a few minutes later but not before committing a dangerous tackle from behind. Now, with twenty minutes to go, Hallen went for an equaliser starting with O’Donovan bringing an excellent low save from the keeper as the ball was entering the corner of the net. Five minutes later, Bennett threw himself at a good low cross but managed to get too good a touch on the ball and it flew over the bar from eight yards. Thirteen minutes to go Collett collected the ball and ran into the penalty area as he was clipped from behind, but the honest striker tried to keep to his feet before his momentum saw him hit the deck. Everyone in the ground waited for the whistle but nothing was given. The action finished in the third minute of added time with Bennett making an excellent cross to the far post where a brave clearance from a defender denied Collett the equaliser that Hallen so richly deserved.
