Hallen 2-2 FROME TOWN September 17, 2011 - F.A. CUP 1st Qualifying Round Previous match | Results list | Next match
FROME’S CHITTY CANNOT STOP COLLETT’S BANG- BANG FROM EARNING A REPLAY Having been reinstated in the competition at the expense of Mangotsfield who beat us by the odd goal, Hallen were desperate to give a good account of themselves against Frome who play in the Premier Division of the Southern League. It is therefore with pride that I quote from Frome’s website: ” Frome Town were shown a footballing lesson in the FA Cup as Toolstation Premier Division side Hallen almost provided a cup upset”. Hallen nearly took the lead in the first minute when a free kick from Collett was misjudged by keeper Chitty who was grateful to push the ball onto the bar. But Frome looked dangerous on the break as we needed a good defensive block from Davis and a good headed clearance from Greening to save the day. Hallen then settled down to play some impressive passing football that saw King shoot just over the bar. Yeo then made a good stop as he had to adjust to deny a shot from the edge of the box, but on 27 minutes, some good inter-passing between Collett and King set up O’Donovan with the keeper to beat but the Hallen front man shot against the shot stopper’s foot as he spread himself. But ten minutes later some great football saw the ball go to King who was manhandled in the area and the assistant indicated a penalty from which Collett fired the ball low into the corner of the net. The half ended with King nearly finishing an eight man move and the usually unmoved Hallen supporters clapping the team off of the pitch. Right from the start of the second half the visitors were more upbeat and it looked as if it was going to be a long 45 minutes as they ran at us at pace causing problems in the Hallen defence. Greening threw his body in the way to make a good block followed by a tremendous reaction save from Yeo to deny a shot from eight yards. But the pressure began to tell and the visitors equalised when a powerful shot was hit across the Hallen keeper who did well to launch himself to his right and get a hand on the ball, but was unfortunate to see it come back off of the post and into the path of a Frome striker who tapped in from six yards. Two minutes later we saw another good save from Yeo but from the resulting corner the ball cleared the bodies in the area to drift directly into the goal at the far post as nobody was guarding this area. As we entered the last period of the game, Hallen made three substitutions bringing the Jedward twins (De Rosa and Knight) and Mowatt into the fray and this led to them playing their passing game again. Five minutes to go and Collett had a sight of goal but his miss hit shot was dragged wide of the post and the excitement continued as O’Donovan wasted an opportunity. But Hallen reaped their just rewards on ninety minutes when Willshire hoisted a free kick that saw a shot from Knight well blocked by the keeper’s foot but Collett was on hand to force the ball over the line. We now have a replay on Wednesday for which our captain becomes available but there must be a worry over the Hallen keeper who needed treatment to a leg injury.
