HALLEN START THEIR CAMPAIGN WITH A VICTORY
Saturday 13th August 2011 – WLP
HALLEN 3 BARNSTAPLE TOWN 1
As you would expect, the pitch and surrounding area looked first class for this opening game of the season and, for that’ much credit must go to those whose hard work had made this happen.
On a lush green surface with the grass a little longer than normal, Hallen started the first half playing with the stiff breeze in their backs but the first chance fell to Barnstaple after a close offside call fell the way of the visitors as the ball grazed the outside of the home post. But the next minute O’Donovan played the ball to Bennett who was unlucky to see his excellent attempt come back out off of the inside of the post. On twelve minutes, the home side were denied by a fine save from the visiting goalkeeper after good work by O’Donovan, Bennett and Andrews. This was followed by a scare for Hallen when Yeo came for a lofted free kick that he was blocked from reaching, but the home keeper made amends to block a shot after a mistake from Davis. Ten minutes before the break the Barnstaple keeper was called into action to deny O’Donovan after being set up by a good move of slick inter-passing but there was no score at half-time.
Four minutes after the break, Hallen took the lead when Yeo hit a long ball that was met by the head of the majestic rising Mowatt and his flick on saw Bennett pounce from eighteen yards to rifle the ball into the roof of the net. Mowatt then went close before Yeo made a good save at the other end before Barnstaple equalised on 61 minutes with a six yard tap in after Yeo blocked the original shot. Strangely, from this point, Hallen became stronger and there was ever going to be only one winner with excellent approach work creating chances for Bennett and O’Donovan only to be denied by the visiting shot-stopper. But on 78 minutes Hallen took the lead when Mowatt rose above the Barnstaple defence with the net bulging from his powerful header from ten yards. With five minutes to go, the Hallen goalkeeper was called upon to make a smart stop but the game was wrapped up with three minutes left when good vision from Andrews saw him pick out O’Donovan on the halfway line. The home number eleven then sprinted sixty yards before squaring the ball to Bennett who was the only player to keep up and the rest was a formality.
