HALLEN 2 LONGWELL GREEN SPORTS 0
Having been involved in knock-out competitions for the majority of the season so far, Hallen returned to league action tonight for the return fixture, the previous one having been lost by Hallen by the only goal of the night. So it was good to see our lads relax and play the good football of which we know them to be capable and this enabled them to score twice in the first half so they could contain their opponents in the second period.
Yeo, the Hallen goalkeeper, inevitably gave in to his injuries prior to this game so we saw Strawrowski take over and it was good to see him get a good punch on a corner conceded in the second minute. But it was Hallen who took the lead after just four minutes when good work by King and Willshire on the right enabled the delivery of a deep cross where Bennett had peeled away from the last defender to head the ball powerfully back across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. The next action was Strawrowski boosting his confidence still further as he made a full-length save low down to his left but most of the action was at the other end of the pitch as De Rosa and Collett fired in shots that brought the keeper into action, and Davis had his scrambled effort from a corner stopped on the line. Hallen then doubled their lead when Collett ran at the middle of the visitors’ defence only to be upended two yards before the penalty area. The Hallen striker got to his feet, fancied his chances, and proved the point by drilling the ball low down into the corner of the net before the keeper could move. The half came to a close with De Rosa being denied by a last ditch tackle after being put in the clear by Bennett followed by the Hallen captain bringing an excellent save from the keeper when his powerful header was going in just under the bar.
Three minutes into the second half, the visitors were unlucky not to score when a striker received the ball low down from the right and his sweet strike rebounded back from the post. Longwell Green then continued to have their best period of the game as Strawrowski had to race from his line where he could only make a half-save before Davis cleared up the situation. Hallen then regained control as Bennett set up Knight for his first touch of the game but the shot was saved as the keeper spread himself well, and the game ended with the Hallen keeper making a similar save so as to keep his clean sheet.
