MINERS DIG DEEP BUT HALLEN LEAVE WITH THREE POINTS
Report by Paul Bywater
Today we travelled to Radstock, a place where you have to battle for everything, and returned with three points having had 65% of the play but by far the lesser of the goal-scoring opportunities. Hallen continued to believe in their “get the ball down and pass it” approach which was made difficult on a bobbly surface but with Andrews as the rev counter of the midfield engine, and vital saves from Yeo, they collected the points on offer with a last ditch goal.
Hallen were the first to shoot at goal but O’Donovan’s effort was deflected narrowly wide of the post. In reply, Radstock put in a good cross, but when presented with just the Hallen keeper to beat, the strike went woefully wide. Back to the other end, Collett had a shot blocked by a defender with the ball coming back to King who went for placement from the edge of the box but missed the target. Then, halfway through the first half, a free kick for Radstock saw the ball centred to a striker who was completely unmarked but again the shot was well wide. In added time of the first half, Yeo in the Hallen goal made a good save as he tipped a shot over the bar and needed to be at his best to dive low to his left to block a shot from the resultant corner. But Radstock were left to curse their luck as one of their players was the first to react and struck the underside of the bar when he should have scored.
The second half saw few chances as Hallen continued to go forward with their inter-passing in an effort to win the game and Radstock were happy to play the long ball out of defence. But as we progressed into the final ten minutes, Hallen started to look more dangerous with De Rosa providing a good cross but Cook couldn’t get enough power behind his goal bound attempt. Collett then shot straight at the keeper who then gave a long kick downfield where Yeo brought off another excellent save to save the day. But Hallen had the last say in added time when a throw in was helped on by a backward header from Simpson and Collett was the first to react and stretch full length to poke the ball over the line from six yards.
