HALLEN ARE UNLUCKY TO COME AWAY WITH NOTHING
Monday 15th August 2011 – WLP
LONGWELL GREEN 2 HALLEN 1
Both teams had started their season with victories last Saturday so this was expected to be a close game. Add to that the fact that it was contested in heavy rain with the ball zipping off the surface, it will be realised that all balls had to be played to feet with a need for first-time control.
The first opportunity fell to Longwell Green when Davis tried to pass the ball across the edge of his own box only to have the ball intercepted but luckily the chance was wasted. It should be noted that before seven minutes registered on the clock, Hallen were on the receiving end of three late and dangerous challenges that left players hobbling. Free kicks were awarded and lectures given but no cards produced. With the play, Hallen took the lead halfway through the half when O’Donovan broke forward on the right before centring. The ball arrived behind Bennett who did well to turn back on himself before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed strike past the keeper from the edge of the box. Ten minutes later, Willshire put in a cross to the near post where the keeper took the ball off of Bennett’s head as he was about to convert the chance.
The start of the second period saw King introduced for the injured Bennett and O’Donovan gave the substitute a glorious chance to double the lead but he delayed his shot and the opportunity vanished. 51 minutes saw the home side’s first strike on goal that was an effort from distance that whistled just over the bar. But two minutes later they scored the equaliser when the Hallen defence failed to clear a long throw-in and a home striker scored a good goal as he swivelled on the edge of the box to hit a volley across the Hallen keeper and into the corner of the net. O’Donovan then had a half-chance from a corner that went wide followed by a twenty yard drive being well saved. But on 69 minutes Longwell Green took the lead when they were awarded a harsh penalty against Davis when a ball was played through the middle before zipping off the wet surface to hit the hand of the Hallen man as he held his arms by his side.
On 73 minutes we saw the first caution of the game to start a flurry of cards the vast majority of which were issued for non-tackle related incidents. With ten minutes to go, it was a case of Hallen pushing forward and Longwell Green looking dangerous on the break as Collett brought a save from the keeper. Then it was the turn of the home side as they were set up by a bad back pass from Willshire that needed to be dealt with by Greening. King then made a good save from a shot from an acute angle. But he had no chance with a shot that hit the post in added time. Hallen still had a chance after five minutes of added time when awarded a free kick twenty-five yards out but the execution made sure that the score remained unaltered.
