Match report:

London Senior Cup - 5 November 2008 Lewisham Borough vs Erith Town

Lewisham Boro claimed another scalp last night in a 2-1 over Erith Town of the Kent League in the second round of the London Senior Cup. The Boro seem to be making a habit of disposing higher opposition under floodlights and will be rewarded with a trip in the third round to Blue Square South side Fisher Athletic.

The night started in brilliant fashion when after only 2 minutes the irrepressible Alex Okisor fired in a thunderous shot from the edge of the box to open the scoring. Boro controlled the early stages after the opening goal, playing sharp, quick and flowing football. The better pitch surface at home compared to the away defeats at Rusthall and Stansfeld helped their football immensely. Demani Campbell and Lee Worboys were working hard in midfield and taking control. Halfway through the first half and it looked as if The Boro were the more senior team. They had little to deal with defensively and much of the credit must go down to Boro's centre pairing Joe Murphy and Mark Hughes. They managed to keep quiet the experienced Dean Burns and Marcus Cassisus who scored a hatrick in the previous round at AFC Wimbledon to virtually no attempts at goal. Towards the back end of the first half, Erith started to exert some pressure on the Boro goal. Their main goal threat was from long throws, but Boro soaked up the majority of what was thrown at them and Dan Teeley in goal was hardly tested. The Boro were not going to have it all their own way and disaster struck 2 minutes before the break when Marcus Cassius drove the ball home after a right wing cross to level the scores.

Second half started and the Boro were moving up a gear. They started to move the ball around and Erith were getting frustrated from the hard work that they were having to do to get any sight of the ball. After 57 minutes a ball splitting pass fell to Alex Okisor who calmly outpaced the Erith defender, now treading water and around the keeper to calmly slot home for a deserving 2-1 lead.

Boro continued to exert their authority on the game and after 60 minutes the real chaos began. A challenge between Demani Campbell and an on rushing Erith player resulted in the Erith player losing out and with frustration getting the better of him, he stamped on the Boro captain. The referee immediately sent off the Erith player and in the hand bags between the players that followed a stray elbow accidentally hit the referee on the nose. Unable to continue, a 15 minute delay was incurred whilst the Referee's assessor changed to take charge of the game.

The game did eventually resume after all the chaos and with only 10 men and some 30 minutes to go, Erith began to pile men forward, but the Boro defence was resolute and dealt comfortably with everything that Erith threw at them. There was only one last twist to the game, with some five minutes remaining, Dan Teeley was forced into a save and the rebounding shot flew high into the sky. The sharp and ever alert Cassisus responded quickly for Erith to meet with a header which some how hit the bar before a Boro defender smashed the rebound out of the ground to safety. Lewisham held on to record a famous 2-1 victory.
