Match report:

Willington move up into the top six defeating Hartlepool 3-2. Stevey Howe, Tucker Bailes with six goals in six games and Gareth Matthews found the net with the winner with his first for the club, were Willington’s match winners at Hartlepool who replied through Kyle Anderson (penalty) and Shaun Atkinson.

WILLINGTON travelled to Hartlepool looking to extend their three game winning sequence against a team who themselves were showing good form as confirmed by their fourth place in the league.

Willington were first out of the blocks when Assistant Player Manager, Steve Howe stabbed home a corner from close range to give his side the lead after only three minutes. Hartlepool pressed for an equaliser and their pressure payed off when Howe was again in the action but this time at the other end of the field when he was adjudged to have fouled Gibson resulting in a penalty which was fired into the top corner by Kyle Anderson giving Stocks no chance.

ht-1-1

Willington again started with an early goal after only two minutes. Dean Hansom had possession in the centre of the field and produced an inch-perfect pass, splitting the home defence to give Paul Bailes a run on goal.

The striker did not waste the opportunity and unleashed a fierce shot from the edge of the box that lashed into the top corner of the net giving him his sixth goal of the season.

The pattern of the first half was repeated with Hartlepool again putting the visitors on the back foot looking for the equaliser.

On 59 minutes a cross found shaun Atkinson with space in the box and he made no mistake to make it 2-2.

Willington dug deep and on 65 minutes Paul Bailes turned provider playing in Gareth Mathews who ran on firing home from 18 yards.

Willington hung on for an excellent three points taking them up to fifth in the league.

Jeff Sawyer.
