News item19 Apr 2009 - Weekend match news

Division One South & West - Champions Truro City increased their lead to thirteen points when a first half penalty was sufficient to give them a 1-0 win at Bishops Cleeve while second in the table AFC Totton needed a last minute goal to share the points at home with Cinderford Town in a 3-3 draw allowing third placed Windsor & Eton to draw level on points when they notched up a 2-0 victory at Burnham. Beaconsfield SYCOB, already assured of a play-off place, scored three times in eight second half minutes in a 4-0 home win over Abingdon United while Didcot Town edged closer to securing the final play-off place when a penalty in each half gave them a 2-0 home win over Slough Town, although Thatcham Town remained just three points behind after scoring a goal nine minutes from time to win 1-0 at Paulton Rovers. League Cup Finalists Bridgwater Town's hopes of a play-off place were dealt a blow when they went down 2-1 at home to Gosport Borough but AFC Hayes recorded a comfortable 4-1 home win over Andover. Bracknell Town conceded two goals in the first half to lose 2-0 at home to Cirencester Town and as a result dropped into bottom place in the table while Taunton Town remain second from bottom despite picking up a point from a 1-1 draw at North Leigh while Winchester City moved off the bottom and out of the relegation places when they scored an 89th minute goal to win 3-2 at home against Uxbridge.

News item16 Apr 2009 - Weekend matches

Division One South & West - A 3-1 home victory over AFC Hayes left Truro City just one win short of clinching the Championship but second in the table Windsor & Eton kept themselves in the race with a 1-0 win at Paulton Rovers to effectively end the home side's play-off chances. AFC Totton secured a place in the play-offs when four goals in the first half gave them a 4-0 home win over North Leigh while Beaconsfield SYCOB were left needing probably just one more point to clinch their place with a 2-1 victory at Bracknell Town who slipped back into the bottom two after Taunton Town rescued a point when a penalty in the 89th minute gave them a 2-2 draw at Slough Town. Didcot Town missed the opportunity of opening up an eight point cushion in the final play-off place when they conceded two goals in the final two minutes to present bottom of the table Winchester City with an unlikely point from a 2-2 draw while Thatcham Town scored four times in the final fifteen minutes on their way to an emphatic 6-1 win at Andover to hold on to sixth place and Bridgwater Town, with a game in hand, stayed level on points with a 2-1 win at Uxbridge. Gosport Borough scored in the penultimate minute to record a 2-1 home win against Cinderford Town while Bishops Cleeve scored twice in the first half to beat visiting Burnham 2-0 and a penalty five minutes from time gave Abingdon United a 3-2 home win over Cirencester Town.

News item16 Apr 2009 - Easter Monday and Midweek action

Division One South & West - Truro City, needing a win to clinch the Championship, raced into a 3-0 lead inside the first 29 minutes at Taunton Town and went on to record a 3-1 victory to take the title and send the home side back into the bottom two. Second in the table Windsor & Eton went down 2-1 at home to Uxbridge leaving AFC Totton to take over the Runners-up spot when they won 5-0 at Burnham with all the goals coming in the second half while fourth in the table Beaconsfield SYCOB made sure of a place in the play-offs despite being held to a 0-0 draw at home by their tenants, Slough Town, but Didcot Town gave the chasing play-off contenders hope when they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Cirencester Town. Thatcham Town moved to within three points of the final play-off place when they scored three in the final twenty minutes to record a 4-2 home win over Gosport Borough and Bridgwater Town kept their hopes alive but needed a goal three minutes from time to take a point from a 1-1 home draw with Paulton Rovers. North Leigh secured a 2-0 home win over Abingdon United with two first half goals while Cinderford Town shared the points with visiting Bishops Cleeve in a 3-3 draw and bottom of the table Winchester City went down 2-1 at home to Andover.

Division One South & West - The fascinating championship race continued as Truro City took over top spot once more by virtue of a 3-2 home win over Uxbridge while overnight leaders Windsor & Eton dropped to third after losing 3-1 at Cirencester Town but AFC Totton held onto second place despite being held to a 0-0 draw at Andover and Beaconsfield SYCOB stayed in touch with a 2-0 win at Taunton Town plunging their hosts dangerously nearer the relegation places. Meanwhile Didcot Town lost 2-1 at home to League Cup finalists Bridgwater Town allowing Thatcham Town, who recorded a 2-0 home win over Cinderford Town, to move to within one point of the final play-off place, and Paulton Rovers kept alive their hopes when two second half strikes gave them a 2-0 home win against Abingdon United. Division One South & West - Windsor & Eton scored three times in the final fifteen minutes to hold onto top spot with a 5-1 victory at early season leaders Cinderford Town who have now slipped off the pace and lie four points off the play-off places. Truro City kept up the pressure on the leaders with a 4-2 win at Gosport Borough and have now gone eleven matches since their last defeat but AFC Totton were only able to come away from their trip to Paulton Rovers with a 0-0 draw to leave them two points behind in third place. Beaconsfield SYCOB kept in touch with the leading pack when a goal five minutes from time gave them a 1-0 win at Burnham but Didcot Town, two goals ahead at half time, were held to a 2-2 draw at Bishops Cleeve. Bridgwater Town recorded a comfortable 3-0 home win over bottom of the table Winchester City and second from bottom Brackley Town crashed 4-0 at home to Thatcham Town. AFC Hayes also lost 4-0 at home when North Leigh scored twice in each half while Slough Town, 3-1 up at the break, looked as if they had thrown away the points at home when third from bottom in the table Andover equalised in the 82nd minute but the home side snatched a goal a minute from time to win 4-3 and Abingdon United held a goal lead at half time of their home match with Uxbridge but the visitors converted two second half penalties to run out 2-1 winners. In the Division's remaining match Taunton Town and visitors Cirencester Town drew 1-1 after both sides had been reduced to nine men.

News item13 Feb 2009 - Next stop for Cleeve, Abingdon United away

MANAGER Paul Collicutt has thrown down a challenge to his Bishop's Cleeve side.

He has urged them to put a winning run together, starting with their trip to Abingdon United tomorrow.

"The big issue with us this season is that we have not been able to put together a winning run," said Collicutt.

Collicutt is hoping to make Kayte Lane a fortress with 10 of their remaining 17 remaining league games at home.

"That means that after this game we will only have six more away games, the rest will be at home," he said.

"That just goes to show the importance of winning your home games.
"I am ever the optimist and we have 10 home games still to play.
"If we can win our home games, who knows?"

"Confidence is a massive thing in football," he said.
"If we can get one win then who's to say we can't go on and get a second and then a third and then suddenly you're on a run and everyone is flying.

"We need to be taking our chances. In our last match we saw Bracknell only have about four chances yet they scored three goals.

Despite his confident mood, Collicutt is refusing to lose touch with reality.

"We will not be getting ideas above our station," he said.
"Our situation is similar to the one at Cheltenham Town at the moment.
"They are punching above their weight at that level and it is the same for us in this league.

"We are trying to compete against bigger clubs with bigger budgets and really just staying in this league is a success.

"But we have to aim for more than that."

Cleeve welcome back defender Richard Mansell and have no injury or suspension worries, although Keith Knight misses the game due to business commitments.

"The break we have had has given certain players the chance to regain a bit of fitness," said Collicutt.

"Players like Sam Avery, Dan Avery and Luke Buttery were able to get a bit of sharpness back and they are raring to go for Abingdon."

News item26 Jan 2009 - Weekend Football News

Division One South & West - AFC Totton, despite going a goal down to bottom of the table Bracknell Town, increased their lead at the top of the table to four points with a 3-1 home win as second placed Windsor & Eton went down 3-2 at Slough Town. Fifth in the table Didcot Town took a two goal lead at home to fourth placed Beaconsfield SYCOB but needed a goal in the penultimate minute to share the points in a 3-3 draw and Cinderford Town also needed a late equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw at North Leigh while Gosport Borough won 2-1 with a goal scored in the 89th minute after going behind at second from bottom Andover. Uxbridge recorded a 3-2 home win over Burnham while Taunton Town, who have now gone seven games without a win, slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Bishops Cleeve and Winchester City's run of four games without defeat was ended, despite having taken the lead with a penalty early in the second half, when they lost 2-1 at home to AFC Hayes whose winner came just three minutes from the end. The games at Bridgwater (v Abingdon United), Paulton Rovers (v Truro City), and Thatcham Town (v Cirencester Town) all fell to the weather, the first two because of waterlogged pitches and the other because of frost.

News item19 Jan 2009 - Division One South & West Weekend News

- Windsor & Eton scored three times in the final half hour to record a 3-0 home win over fourth in the table Didcot Town and retain their lead at the top of the table while second placed AFC Totton maintained their challenge with a 2-1 win at Bridgwater Town and Truro City consolidated third place with a resounding 6-2 win at Burnham. Beaconsfield SYCOB made it seven games without defeat with a comfortable 3-1 home win over Bishops Cleeve and Thatcham Town recorded a 1-0 win over visiting Uxbridge. Paulton Rovers won 2-1 at North Leigh but Gosport Borough were held to a 1-1 draw at Taunton Town with both goals coming in the first nine minutes. Cirencester Town secured a mid table position with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Slough Town while Cinderford Town beat Andover 5-0 to send their visitors crashing to the bottom of the table replacing Winchester City despite the latter's home match against Bracknell Town being called off because of a waterlogged pitch. Match of the day was probably at AFC Hayes where the home side, despite having led 2-1 and 3-2, required an 88th minute equaliser to take a point off Abingdon United in a 4-4 draw.

News item30 Nov 2008 - News Roundup Weekend Matches

Division One South & West -

The leadership of the table changed yet again with Didcot Town returning to top spot when three goals in a four minute spell mid way through the first half gave them a 3-1 win at Gosport Borough while Truro City slipped to third place after being held 2-2 at home by North Leigh but Windsor & Eton, with a 2-0 home win over Bridgwater Town, took over second place, level on points with the leaders from two fewer games. AFC Totton moved into fourth place, level on points with Truro but with two games in hand, with a 4-2 win at Cirencester Town but Cinderford Town were held to a 1-1 home draw by Beaconsfield SYCOB. Paulton Rovers stayed in touch with the leading pack with a 5-3 win at second from bottom Andover and Abingdon United scored twice in the second half to defeat Bracknell Town 2-0, a result that ensured the visitors remained in the bottom three. News item30 Nov 2008 - How Uxbridge saw the match

The first half was a pretty low key affair, with goalscoring opportunities very much at a premium, as neither side took control of the game. The only goal of the half went Uxbridge's way after 20 minutes as David Warner beat the offside trap to beat visiting goalkeeper Gilder to the ball, then finishing neatly from the edge of the area.

After the break Bishops Cleeve suddenly realised that if they played the ball around they could damage a rather pedestrian Uxbridge back line and after 53 minutes the equaliser came as Mayo finished very well after creating the opportunity with some close ball skills. Three minutes later it got worse for the home side as Bishops Cleeve took advantage of some more poor defending - Gascoyne driving home a fine low shot from 20 yards after a poor defensive header.

This shocked Uxbridge back into action and the introduction of Dave Lawrence immediately paid dividends for the Reds as he caused the Bishops Cleeve no end of problems with his pace and skill. The equaliser came after 63 minutes, from the penalty spot, after Dave Lawrence was bundled over unceremoniously by a clumsy challenge, and Mark Nicholls converted neatly from the spot.

The main feature of the second half was how poorly both sides defended and it was no surprise that a mix-up at the back would lead to another goal. It was Bishops Cleeve who made a complete hash of things which culminated with a poor clearance from goalkeeper Gilder, that went straight to Mark Nicholls and his skilful ball to Dave Lawrence was finished with a brilliant low shot into the goal past the helpless goalkeeper.

Bishops Cleeve looked for an equaliser, with a series of high balls to the influential Alsop, who was causing the Reds defence all sorts of problems, which they struggled to deal with. With just 4 minutes remaining Bishops Cleeve scored the equaliser they probably deserved, when from an inswinging right wing corner Vercesi scored with a simple near post header.

News item24 Nov 2008 - How Gosport saw Saturdays match

Boro' came out slowly and were immediately on the back foot when Ben Gascoigne literally walked the ball into an unguarded net after a mix-up between Boro's Adam Sheppherd and goalkeeper Nick Hutchings.

Gosport couldn't cope with the larger, more physical visitors and Bishops ran the game throughout the first period with the home side only able to shoot at distance. Boro' were spectators with skipper Josh Thomas the only player to make any sort of impression on the game - usually when he was called on to mop up for others.

A double substitution at half time brought a more positive feeling to the team with the ineffective Sheppherd and lightweight Lloyd O'Neill (who was suffering in the physical game) swapped for Wayne Boud and James Ford.

But the half got of to the worst possible start as Michael Jackson applied the final touch to a whipped cross and the visitors were two up.

It was Gosport though who looked the better side and for ten minutes Bishops looked like a side about to be ripped apart. In fact Boro' did reduce the deficit when Justin Bennett shot into the far corner of Guilder's net just after the hour.

But Bishops dug in and refused to allow their advantage to slip. When Gosport fell asleep at the back Richard Mansell slipped the ball past Hutchings to restore the advantage.

Gosport then lost Glenn Howes to injury - the midfielder replaced by Dave Waterman before Jackson added his second and the visitor's fourth when the Bishops number five sent a goal line clearance back into the net.

To cap a poor afternoon for Boro' Nick Hutchings picked up an injury in that incident and the home side were forced to play out the remainder of the game with ten men as Gavin Jones took over the 'keeper's jersey.

The Boro': Hutchings, Jones, D Birmingham, Thomas, Puckett, Sheppher (Ford 45), Chudy, Howes (Waterman 78), Culliford, Bennett, O'Neill (Boud), Subs not used: Brown and M Birmingham

News item24 Nov 2008 - FA Trophy First Round Proper Draw

A minimum of seven British Gas Business League Clubs were handed home ties when the draw for the First Round Proper was made with two further Clubs at home if they get through this week's replays. Swindon Supermarine, against Eastbourne Borough, Cambridge City with a visit from near neighbours Kettering Town, AFC Sudbury against Oxford United, and Chesham United against Crawley Town all host Conference Premier clubs while Hemel Hempstead Town and Bury Town will face difficult trips to Conference Premier Forest Green Rovers and Havant & Waterlooville respectively. Stourbridge will be at home to either Whitby Town, of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, or Conference North Stalybridge Celtic and Brackley Town will make the short trip to Conference South strugglers Basingstoke Town but arguably the tie of the round is the visit to Uxbridge of the high flying and hugely supported Isthmian Premier Division AFC Wimbledon. If Tiverton Town win their replay against Bishops Stortford it will set up the only all BGB tie if the Round at Bashley whereas if Farnborough are successful on Tuesday against Braintree Town they will have a home tie against Isthmian League opposition facing either Wingate & Finchley of Division One North or Premier Division Sutton United. AFC Totton will also be rewarded with an attractive home tie against Conference Premier Weymouth if they overcome Welling United on Tuesday.

Stourbridge v Whitby Town or Stalybridge Celtic
Swindon Supermarine v Eastbourne Borough
Cambridge City v Kettering Town
AFC Sudbury v Oxford United
Bashley v Bishop’s Stortford or Tiverton Town
Welling United or AFC Totton v Weymouth
Forest Green Rovers v Hemel Hempstead Town
Braintree Town or Farnborough v Wingate & Finchley or Sutton United
Uxbridge v AFC Wimbledon
Havant & Waterlooville v Bury Town
Basingstoke Town v Brackley Town
Chesham United v Crawley Town

Ties will be played on Saturday 13 December
