News item21 May 2010 - Royals in hunt for new striker

UniBond League Division One South club Sutton Coldfield Town have joined the fight to sign prolific marksman Mark Bellingham after losing top scorer Craig Marshall.

Striker Marshall’s goals left the Royals within sight of the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands play-offs but he has returned to Zamaretto Premier outfit Hednesford Town.

A goal-getter is now top of Royals boss Chris Keogh’s wanted list and he confirmed he would be speaking to Bellingham, who has left Leamington.

“Apart from Craig Marshall, we’ve pretty much tied up everybody from last season,” said Keogh.

“Now it’s a question of trying to improve the squad. It’s disappointing to lose Craig when he had agreed to stay. But I’m not going to fall out with him. You never know when our paths will cross again.”

Keogh, though, is happy to be patient in recruiting new players and admits: “I’m happy to wait. It’s all about talking at this time of year.”

News item20 May 2010 - Squad news

The Royal's assistant manager, Neil Tooth, has confirmed that with only one exception, last season's squad have all agreed to stay with the club for next season. Only Craig Marshall has left to join Hednesford Town.

Neil expressed his delight with the news about the move to the Northern League after the time he has spent in the Unibond League with Chasetown and Retford. "Travelling will be much easier and we will be visiting some top class grounds. I am familiar with many of the teams and players so although we are in a new league, it will not be a journey into the unknown".

He added that the club are in talks with five players and he hopes that they will all join the club over the next ten days or so.

News item25 Apr 2010 - Last day disappointment for Royals

Sutton missed out on the play offs by goal difference for the second season in succession when a 2-0 victory at Beaconsfield was not enough to hang on to fifth place in the table. Slough beat Romulus 4-1 at Coles Lane to clinch a play off semi final against Hitchin by a better goal difference of just one goal.

Fifth place in the table switched between the two sides seven times during the afternoon but the Royals could not find the third goal of the game that would have secured the place in their favour.

News item25 Apr 2010 - League round up - 24th April

Bury Town scored three goals in the opening half-hour to beat Marlow 3-0 and clinch the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands championship in front of a bumper crowd of 1,550 at Ram Meadow on Saturday. Former Histon striker Kieron Leabon proved to be the Blues` hero on the day, netting a hat trick with goals in the 10th, 16th and 30th minutes.

Hitchin Town had to settle for runners-up spot when they were held to a goalless draw at The Gore against third-placed Burnham.

Chesham United, already guaranteed a play-off place, raced into a 3-1 lead in the opening 29 minutes at Atherstone Town, courtesy of Liam Farrell, Dave Fotheringham and Danny Gudgeon, but had to settle for a point from a 3-3 draw and the final play-off place was settled on goal difference when Slough Town scored with 2 minutes remaining with Elliott Buchanan`s second of the day to record a 4-1 away win over Romulus. Sutton Coldfield Town, despite winning 2-0 at Beaconsfield SYCOB with goals from Jamille Matt and Matt Dodd, fell a goal short to finish in sixth place.

The bottom two clubs, already relegated, clashed at Aylesbury United where a goal early in the second half from Sam Spencer gave Barton Rovers a 1-0 victory.

Elsewhere AFC Sudbury were held to a 1-1 draw by Woodford United, whose Nick Gordon cancelled out Gareth Heath`s 22nd minute opener for the hosts 16 minutes from time.

Arlesey Town scored a goal in each half from Ryan Frater and Luke Gregson to win 2-0 at home against Leighton Town, Bedworth United scored a resounding 4-0 home win over Biggleswade Town in which Levi Ramsay bagged a brace, weary Rothwell Town won 2-0 at home against Bromsgrove Rovers with goals from Shaun Goodall and Robbie Maddox, and Soham Town Rangers beat visiting Stourport Swifts 1-0, thanks to Tom Libertore after 31 minutes.

News item21 Apr 2010 - Play off place goes to the wire

The Royals travel to Beaconsfield on the last day of the season level on points and goal difference with Slough Town in the chase for fifth place after Slough were beaten by Hitchin last night.

We currently occupy the last play off place thanks to a better goals scored record so assuming Slough win when they play Romulus at Coles Lane on Saturday, we will need to win at Beaconsfield by the same score as they achieve or by a bigger margin.

After Bury also won last night, their better goal difference may prove decisive in the chase with Hitchin for the championship and automatic promotion. If that's the case, it will be a trip to Hitchin for Sutton or Slough next Tuesday.

News item20 Apr 2010 - League round up - 20th April

In the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands on Tuesday night, top of the table Bury Town stayed on track for the title when a goal in each half gave them a 2-0 win at Woodford United. Sam Nunn opened the Blues` account after 12 minutes and Kieran Leabon made sure with a second on 63 minutes.

Hitchin Town stayed in contention when a goal in the 16th minute from Ieuan Lewis gave them a 1-0 win at Slough Town, who were replaced by Sutton Coldfield Town in the final play-off place.

Chesham United made sure of a play-off berth with a 2-0 win at Barton Rovers, a result which confined the home side to relegation. Steve Wales after 18 minutes and Sam Ledger 6 minutes later were the Generals on the mark at Sharpenhoe Road.

Elsewhere, Soham Town Rangers won 2-1 at home against Leighton Town wwith goalsd from Steve Flanz and Gareth Hipwell, Stourport Swifts had a 3-0 victory at weary Rothwell Town, and Romulus were held to a goalless draw at home by Arlesey Town.

News item18 Apr 2010 - League round up - 17th April

The Zamaretto League Division One Midlands championship became a two-horse race when leaders Bury Town scored twice in each half to win 4-0 at Bromsgrove Rovers and second-placed Hitchin Town scored twice in the final 7 minutes to record a comfortable 4-1 home win over Beaconsfield SYCOB.

Lee Underwood once again proved what a shrewd signing he has been by netting two more in the 7th and 59th minutes, with Lee Reed on 19 and Kieran Leabon on 57 minutes also on the mark for Bury.

Hitchin led SYCOB 2-1 with Jamie Arlick after 11 minutes and Harry Hunt just before half time being pegged back by the visitors` Craig O`Connor 14 minutes from time. But Anthony Fontanelle and Zak Burke calmed Canaries` nerves with two more in the last 7 minutes.

But third-placed Burnham's title hopes disappeared when they went down 3-1 at Sutton Coldfield Town - a result which kept alive the home side's hopes of reaching the play-offs. Craig Owen, Matt Jackson and Craig Marshall were the Royals on target, Aaron Couch for the visitors.

Slough Town, however, held on to the final play-off place with a resounding 5-1 home win over bottom of the table Aylesbury United. Former Duck Paul Edgeworth gave the Rebels an early 5th minute lead that an own goal, Simon Martin and a Mo Sharif brace added to.

Chesham United were left still needing two points to make sure of their extra game when a first half penalty from Jai Stanley gave Bedworth United an unlikely 1-0 away win.

Woodford United scored early in the second half through veteran Howard Forinton to win 1-0 at home against Soham Town Rangers, and Romulus scored with 17 minutes remaining, courtesy of Tyrone Fagan to record a 1-0 victory at Biggleswade Town, while Arlesey Town won 1-0 at Stourport Swifts with the goal coming in the 7th minute from Luke Gregson.

Marlow were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Atherstone Town, whose Simeon Smith cancelled out Marcus Mealing`s opener on the hour-mark just 9 minutes later.

Leighton Town struck with 6 minutes remaining with Dan Walker`s second of the game to win 2-1 at home against Rothwell Town, whose Sam Maude had equalised, while second from bottom Barton Rovers kept their hopes of survival alive with a 2-0 home win over AFC Sudbury with goals from Ashley Daniels after 12 minutes and Alex O`Brien in the last few seconds from the spot.

News item9 Apr 2010 - League round up - 8th April

Sutton Coldfield Town maintained their challenge for a play-off place in the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands with a comfortable 3-0 win at Rothwell Town on Thursday night. A `pay want you want` night at Cecil Street `boosted` the attendance to 124, and saw a Bones` defeat that began with Richard Ball`s early 3rd minute goal for the Royals. Craig Milligan eventually doubled the visitors` advantage 12 minutes from time, with Craig Marshall making sure with a third a couple of minutes later.

Soham Town Rangers hit four goals in eighteen minutes early in the second half on their way to a 5-2 win at Bedworth United. Amazingly, it was goalless at the break, with Scott Carter breaking the deadlock 3 minutes into the second half. Deakan Napier made it 2-0 less than 4 minutes later and Andy Furnell added the third on 57 minutes. A minute later Ben Harris reduced the arrears for the Greenbacks only for Dubi Ogbonna to make it 4-1 on 65 minutes. Jim Graham pulled another back for the home side 4 minutes later before sub Richard Gammon rounded things off with Soham`s fifth in stoppage time.

Biggleswade Town came from behind to win 2-1 at home against bottom of the table Barton Rovers. Micky Harman bagged a brace for Biggleswade, with Tom Hole having given Rovers an 11th minute lead.

And in the other game played on Thursday, Beaconsfield SYCOB scored in the first half through Craig O`Connor to record a 1-0 home victory over Marlow.

News item6 Apr 2010 - League round up - 5th April

With the top six clubs in the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands all winning there was no change at the top of the table after Bank Holiday Monday`s round of matches.

Leaders Bury Town scored 10 minutes from time having had to come from behind to win 2-1 at home against Soham Town Rangers. Michael Simpson gave Rangers their 35th minute lead that Ben Coker cancelled out from the penalty spot right on half time, with Kieran Leabon grabbing the winner on 80 minutes.

Second in the table Burnham scored twice in each half through Dennis Fennemore, who netted a hat trick, and Ross Lafayette to win 4-1 at Beaconsfield SYCOB.

Third-placed Hitchin Town had a comfortable 3-0 home victory over bottom of the table Barton Rovers, courtesy of goals from Jon Stevenson with a brace and Carl Williams.

Chesham United scored three times in the first half through Daniel Talbot, John Frendo and an own goal on the way to a 3-2 home win over AFC Sudbury, whose Jemel Fox scored twice, and Slough Town won 1-0 at Marlow, thanks to an own goal 5 minutes before the break.

Sutton Coldfield Town kept up their outside chances of reaching the play-offs when a goal midway through the second half from Craig Marshall gave them a 1-0 win at Bromsgrove Rovers.

Biggleswade Town scored the only goal of the second half through Brett Donnelly to secure a 3-2 home win against Arlesey Town.

Atherstone Town also scored after the break, courtesy of Luke Keen, to win 1-0 at home against Bedworth United, but Woodford United, who took the lead on the stroke of half time through Nathan Liburd, conceded twice in the second half from Shaun Goodall and Jason Turner to go down 2-1 at home to Rothwell Town, while Romulus were held to a goalless draw at home by Stourport Swifts, and James Hatch bagged both goals for Leighton Town in their 2-1 home win over struggling Aylesbury United.

News item4 Apr 2010 - League round up - 3rd April

In the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands on Saturday, Bury Town stayed on top of the table when a goal in each half gave them a 2-0 win at old rivals AFC Sudbury. The former Ridgeons League rivals saw Ben Coker give the Blues a 17th minute lead from the penalty spot and Kieran Leabon double just before the hour-mark.

Second in the table Burnham dropped a home point when Marlow levelled the scores at 2-2 in the final minute. Stuart Swift gave the Blues the lead on 9 minutes with Jermaine Roche leveling a minute later. Trevor Charlery restored Burnham`s lead before Leigh Mason equalised on 89 minutes.

Hitchin Town kept up their title challenge with a goal 10 minutes from time giving them a 2-1 win at neighbours Arlesey Town. Jamie Arlick gave the Canaries a 32nd minute lead that Michael Watkins cancelled out on 67 minutes. However, Zak Burke won it for the visitors on 80 minutes.

Chesham United consolidated their play-off place with a goal in the final minute from former Ducks` skipper Nick Leach giving them a 1-0 win at second-from-bottom Aylesbury United.

Slough Town kept up their challenge with a 3-1 home win over tenants Beaconsfield SYCOB with goals from Elliott Buchanan with a brace and Nabil Sharif cancelling out Simon Sweeney`s own goal for SYCOB, but Sutton Coldfield Town dropped two home points against their tenants, Romulus, after having to come from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw. News item31 Mar 2010 - League round up - 30th March

In the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands on Tuesday night, Bury Town ensured they held on to top spot when, despite conceding a 3rd minute penalty, they won 3-1 at bottom of the table Barton Rovers. Bilal Hassan gave Rovers their 3rd minute boost from the spot, but Ben Coker replied, also from twelve yards, just 8 minutes later. Sam Nunn then gave the Blues a 56th minute lead with Lee Reed making sure with a third 16 minutes from time.

Burnham moved back into second place when a goal in the 2nd minute from Craig O`Connor gave them a 1-0 away win against play-off candidates Chesham United.

Hitchin Town, a goal ahead through Harry Hunt after just 7 minutes, slipped to a shock 2-1 home defeat when Soham Town Rangers scored with 10 minutes remaining through Dubi Ogbonna after Charles Libam had equalised in the 36th minute.

Arlesey Town returned to winning ways at play-off contenders Slough Town with an opening goal from Adam Watkins after 9 minutes and a second from Chris Marsh 4 minutes later. And while Elliott Buchanan pulled one back for the hosts just after the half-hour mark, the Blues held out for a 2-1 victory.

Bromsgrove Rovers shared the points in a 1-1 home draw with Atherstone Town, with Stuart Hendrie cancelling out Nathaniel Waite`s 29th minute opener for Rovers on the hour-mark.

Beaconsfield SYCOB picked up a point from a 1-1 draw at Leighton Town – both goals coming within 3 minutes of each other midway through the opening half – Ben Gallant for Leighton and Brandon Martin for SYCOB, while Woodford United recorded a 3-2 home win over Romulus. Tom Fountain gave the home side a 6th minute lead that Tyrone Fagan levelled on 20 minutes. Glenn Hawkins restored United`s lead a minute before the break and added a third 4 minutes after it, with Lea Brown pulling one back for Roms on 69 minutes.

News item28 Mar 2010 - League round up - 27th March

It really couldn`t be tighter in the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands as Saturday`s results produced a three-way tie at the top.

Bury Town, Hitchin Town and Burnham now share top billing, and they hold a healthy nine-point advantage over fourth-placed Chesham United and seventeen over sixth-placed Sutton Coldfield Town.

Bury went nap at Ram Meadow against Romulus with Sam Reed bagging a brace, Ben Coker, Sam Nunn and Tom Bullard singles.

Hitchin won 2-1 at Sheepy Road against the youthful Atherstone Town with goals from Harry Hunt and Dean Gilbert.

However, Burnham were the only losers, giving up top spot as a consequence of a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Leighton Town, whose Craig Kench, Ben Gallant and Dan Walker were all on target.

Chesham beat Biggleswade Town 3-0 at Meadow Park to maintain their play-off challenge. Darryl Cox gave the Generals a 17th minute lead that John Frendo doubled on 31 minutes and Steve Wales made it game over right on half time.

Slough Town occupy fifth spot and enjoyed a 3-1 win at Cecil Street against Rothwell Town. Sean Sonner gave the Rebels the lead a minute before the break and Robbie Maddox`s 55th minute leveller looked to have earned the Bones a point, until Elliott Buchanan and Gary Sippetts popped up in the final couple of minutes.

Sutton Coldfield lost ground when surprisingly going down to a 2-0 defeat at Coles Lane against second-bottom Aylesbury United. Richard Pringle and then Robert Bartley secured an unexpected, but nevertheless, very welcome win for the Ducks.

Pity then poor old bottom-markers Barton Rovers! They go and win 5-2 at fast-falling Beaconsfield SYCOB and would have expected to have moved off the bottom but for Aylesbury`s success at Sutton. Bilal Hassan, Callum Donnelly, Sammy Winston and an Alex O`Brien double were the Rovers` marksmen.

Elsewhere, AFC Sudbury edged out visiting Stourport Swifts 2-1, with Daniel Emmanuel`s winner coming 5 minutes from time after new signing Craig Calver had cancelled out Dan Gayton`s 45th minute opener for Swifts 5 minutes after half time.

Michael Simpson bagged a brace for Soham Town Rangers in their 2-0 success at Bromsgrove Rovers, while the other two games finished all-square. Arlesey Town drew 1-1 at Hitchin Road against Woodford Town, whose Nicky Gordon gave them a 66th minute lead that Zema Abbey equalised 6 minutes later. Marlow and Bedworth United shared a 3-3 encounter in which Ashley Wilks scored twice for the Greenbacks.

News item27 Mar 2010 - Matt Fisher joins the Royals

Sutton Coldfield Town will be able to count on the know-how of former England semi-professional international Matt Fisher in their bid to gatecrash the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands play-offs.

Midfielder Fisher has joined from UniBond League Premier Division side Retford United and will make his Royals debut on Monday when they entertain Rothwell Town.

Work commitments meant former Tamworth, Kettering Town, Stevenage Borough and Alfreton Town playmaker Fisher – 34 next month – has not played this term and Retford have now released him from his contract so he will be available for the final month of the season as Sutton bid to reach the top five.

“Matt’s experience will be brilliant for us,” said assistant-manager Neil Tooth. “We are a young side and Matt brings with him experience of playing at Wembley in the FA Trophy Final and playing for England at semi-pro level.

“It’s great that we have so many young players because they are keen and full of energy but you also need some experience to drag them across the line.”

With winger Matt Dodd already back fit after his knee injury, Sutton also expect defender Adam Wood to make his comeback next week. The former Boldmere St Michaels and Market Drayton Town player has been recovering from a hamstring injury and should feature against Rothwell.

Sutton missed the chance to overhaul Slough Town to take fifth spot after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bromsgrove Rovers on Monday.

But Tooth said the Royals needed to build on the positives. “We were disappointed not to have won the game, especially with the chances we created, but credit to Bromsgrove too and their keeper Karl Lewis, who was brilliant on the night,” he added.

“We can’t be too harsh. The bigger picture is that we are twelve matches unbeaten in the league.

“The games are going to be coming thick and fast and there will be twists and turns throughout the league. It’s a cliché but it’s true.”

News item22 Mar 2010 - Zammo hangs up his boots!

Chris Keogh, manager of Zamaretto League Division One Midlands club Sutton Coldfield Town, says he has been left ‘gobsmacked’ by Nathan Moran’s decision to hang up his boots during his testimonial season.

Moran has announced his retirement after work commitments and a young family meant it became increasingly difficult to juggle his football.

But Royals boss Keogh said he was disappointed the long-serving midfielder, who has had ten years at Coles Lane, had decided to quit now when Sutton are chasing a play-off place.

Moran has been in and out of the side in recent weeks but Keogh said the player had initially said he would help out for the rest of the campaign before sending a text to the Sutton boss in midweek.

“I’m gobsmacked that he didn’t want to stay involved for the rest of the season when we are pushing for promotion,” said Keogh.

“I’m disappointed that he had made the decision now, before the end of his testimonial season, and I feel a little bit let down.

‘‘He has been a good servant to this club, but we have looked after him too.

“To have put so much hard work into the club and then after ten years to walk away when there’s a chance of promotion, I don’t really understand why he has decided to retire now.”

News item8 Jul 2009 - Round up of recent news

Former SCTFC keeper Tony Breedon last night put pen to paper to confirm his return to Coles Lane after spells at Solihull and Rushall and will join Chris Keogh's new squad for the coming season as they start back in full training on Saturday morning, 11am at Coles Lane.

SCTFC are very pleased to confirm that Chris Keogh has appointed Paul Holleran as his new assistant manager for the coming season.
After having talks with a number of clubs, Paul has decided to join Sutton and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge of non league football. Paul was most recently in charge at Rushall and lists Solihull Moors and Halesowen amongst his previous clubs.

Chris Keogh has made a further signing today with Graham Deakin joining Sutton for the new season. Graham's experience of playing for Halesowen in the Southern League Premier Division will help the club in the push for promotion this season.

InterContinental Brands (ICB) Ltd has concluded a sponsorship deal with the Southern Football League, which from 1 July 2009 will be known as “The Zamaretto League”.

ICB has a strong track record of supporting sporting endeavours and high profile sports, and particularly football events and Zamaretto (a colourful range of Amarettos for connoisseurs) is the most recent in a string of successful new product launches (notably Vodkat Classic Schnapps and St Helier Pear Cider) from the dynamic Harrogate based independent drinks company.

With the majority of last season's squad retained for the coming season, manager Chris Keogh has made two additional signings this week with Matt Jackson and Nathan Lamey joining the Royals.

Matt makes his return to Coles Lane after a spell at Boldmere and Nathan was previously with Rushall and Bromsgrove.

Steve Hinks, assistant manager to Chris Keogh, is leaving the club to take up a new role at Darlaston FC. Everyone at Sutton sends their very best wishes to Steve for his move and all at Coles Lane are very appreciative of the work that Steve has done with Chris and the first team players since he joined the club. Steve will be a welcome guest at Coles Lane in the future when he gets chance to visit us again.
