| CLUB DETAILS |
Current Downs League Champions for season 2002/2003
The club has played continually in the Bristol Downs league, although the First XI did play for a number of years in the Gloucestershire County League.
They have secured a host of honours since winning the Downs League Championship for the first time in 1921-22.
They clinched the championship on 16 occasions, in the season 1966-67, they had quite an unique achievement.
That season their teams won the Championships of Divisions 1, 2, 3, and 4, and their Under 17 team won the Bristol Church of England League.
They have also won the Downs League’s Norman Hardy Cup 20 times. Clifton St. Vincent’s reached the pinnacle locally in 1958-59, when they won the G.F.A. Senior Amateur Cup (South) and repeated that success in 1961-62, the last time they won a county cup championship.
The club has been proud of its playing traditions and achievements over the years. This has been made possible by tireless work undertaken by a legion of club men who have, by their efforts, passed on their sense of comradeship from one generation to the next.
The early efforts of Mr R. W. J. Pavey, the Club’s first President, Mr A. V. Chivers, Harold Hook, Billy Shepherd, and Fred Loader, Bristol’s first England schoolboy international, paved the way for the likes of Bob Musselwhite, Derek Rogers, Ken Pitcher, and Doug Grierson, to continue to take the club forward.
It is this sense of continuity that is the club’s strength. Today they have a number of ex-players who are still actively involved in running the club.
Dick Edbrooke, who joined in 1938, is President, Tony Gray and Colin Mitchell, both joined in 1945 after the war, and Roger Kirby who arrived in 1949, all are still key members of the club today.
Clifton St. Vincents enjoyed their centenary celebrations in 1999 and are all set to continue their traditions of encouraging youth with strong administrative back up.
