| CLUB DETAILS |
Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season to play in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions. The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928.
During the 1929-30 campaign The Main reached the Quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs on the way before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic. This game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!
The Villagers fellow quarter finalists that day included Wimbledon.
Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League, competing with teams such as Heaton Stannington, Seghill and Bohemians.
The club subsequently joined the Northern Alliance and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 and 1971.
In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl with a 1-0 win over West Allotment after a replay at North Shields Appleby Park ground in front of a crowd of 500.
The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 under the guidance of Colin Revell while the club finished runners up in 1983. Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 under the joint guidance of managers Bob Rodgerson and John Humberstone and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.
In the Spring of 2003 the club with vital cash aid from the Football Foundation erected a new perimeter fence around the ground which completely enclosed Purvis Park. A plaque in the clubhouse dedicates the erection of the fence to former club treasurer Gary Hull, tragically killed in a road accident in January 2003.
After a couple of disappointing seasons that saw Percy Main finish second bottom of the table the club rallied last term and won the Northumberland Bowl for only the second time, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park 2-0 while finishing their Premier League campaign in fourth place. A showing that gained the The Villagers their first Northumberland Senior Cup entry for over 20 years.
From last season the club has joined forces with Tyne Youth and Community to form a thriving junior section coming under the Percy Main AFC umbrella. There are now 9 junior sides from Under 8's (mini soccer) through to Under 18's and this season has seen 6 junior players progress with distinction to the Senior side.
Percy Main's Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
DIRECTIONS TO PURVIS PARK.
Travelling by Metro, alight at Percy Main Metro station and the ground is visible from the Newcastle bound platform on your left. A walk of around 300 yards.
By car, on the A19 take the eastbound A193, signs North Shields. Head straight over the first roundabout and turn sharp right at the next, signs Percy Main. Follow the main road under the Metro bridge, the road bears to the left and the ground is adjacent to Percy Main Cricket Club.
Turn left just before the Cricket Club into St Johns Green for access to Purvis Park.
