Worthing Wanderers F.C. were established in 1999 by three teenage friends, Rob Brown, Nick Brett and Matt Paice. The three are still part of the First Team and also carry the titles of President, Chairman and Major Share Holder!
Starting life out in season 1999/00 in Division Four of The Worthing + Horsham Sunday League where we gained promotion finishing 4th it was an average season that saw Managerial Problems, Nick Brett and Rob Brown were often left in charge and it was clear this could not go on as a sucess, we were finding our feet and settling for promotion was clearly enough.
The 2000/01 proved to be memorable, Wanderers stabalised as Darren Payne, who had been forced to retire early from the game just weeks before was put in charge as Manager. In his opening season Division Three was good to Wands as they took The Division Three Cup at Woodside Road and lost the Championship finishing second only on goal difference(!!) to Chequers F.C.
It was The Magic Wands arguably most succesful season coming very close to the "double".
The following year 2001/02 saw Division Two arrive, Wands had a disappointing year finishing 4th but was still good enough for promotion. Life on a Sunday was getting hard especially with the hangovers etc(!). The Board had meeting after meeting and took a major decison, one that would change Wands forever........
Saturday Football beckoned........
The Magic Wands affiliated with The Worthing + District League were asked to start in their Division Two for the start of the 2002/03 campaign, they quickly again grabbed promotion with once again a runners-up medal, finishing second to rivals L+S Athletic, this was becoming all too familiar for The Magic Wands.
The 2003/04 Division One Season was a succesful one and probably on record as the best.......Un-beaten all season and losing our only and first league game of that campaign on the last day of the season to Revenue, handing them the Championship in that major fixture, it was yet again a bitter taste as Wands for the third time in five seasons finished second in the league table. Good Cup runs were also apparent that year.
The 2003/04 season was also a turning point for another reason in Wands short establishment. With more players wanting to join, the Board took it upon themselves to start up a Reserve Side in Division Three of the same league. In their first season they finished 4th just missing out on promotion but have made a fantastic start to the 04/05 season under the guidance of Player Coach, Mark Ramshaw.
Wanderers First Team are in their 6th Season and for the last 5 seasons have been Managed by Wanderers Legend Darren Payne who has a fantastic record at the club, he has remarkably won promotion every year taking them to the heights of The Premier where they are challenging for major honours once again.
In January 2005 Manager Darren Payne decided to head into "the office" for more behind the scenes activities and took the title of Director of Football at Worthing Wanderers F.C.
He has stepped down from the management and so Wands turned to Craig Stuart, this year's assistant to Payne has been given the Manager's job Full Time and with the knowledge and experience he possesses hopoes to take the club to the next level.
They only hope not to finish second this year, from the bottom that is.............
