Rushall Olympic 2-1 Tipton May 12, 2009 - Walsall Senior Cup Final Previous match | Results list | Next match
Walsall Senior Cup Final Rushall Olympic 2 Tipton Town 1 It was the late show at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium as Rushall claimed the Walsall Senior Cup with an injury time strike from top scorer Nathan Lamey. The result was harsh on Tipton who did well to battle back into the game after conceding in the first half, substitute Chris Turner looked to have forced extra time with a classy finish before Lamey struck his second. A fairy cagey start was expected as both sides looked to give nothing away, Richard Huckfield headed over for Tipton and Rushall’s Carl Palmer was denied by Wes Cox. Both sides gained in confidence as the half went on, Nicky Campbell fired wide from 25 yards before the opening goal arrived, Jarred Stevens sent the ball into the box and Lamey reacted quickest to stab the loose ball home from six yards. Rushall continued to press for the remainder of the half with Tipton restricted to playing on the break. The ever impressive Lamey continued to cause problems after the break, his shot on the turn was wide just minutes into the second half. Tipton introduced Leon Allen and Turner as they pressed for an equaliser, it was Tipton doing all the pressing, Allen fired over from distance after a half cleared corner. With the clock pushing 90 minutes Turner produced a moment of magic to get space in between the defence as Rushall keeper Tony Breedon narrowed the angle the young striker produced a fine finish to level the scores. The four minutes of stoppage time proved to be eventful, Rushall substitute Craig Marshall was denied by a smart save from Cox. There was less than half a minute on the clock when Rushall launched one final attack, a long ball found Lamey who somehow managed to find the far corner from the edge of the box with a well placed effort. It was harsh on Tipton who were the better side in the second period and looked to be ending the game strongest. Credit must go to Rushall and Lamey who proved to be the difference on the night. Tipton have come a long way this season and to match a side that reached the Unibond Playoffs is credit in itself, a regroup next season looks set to see Tipton be in for a successful season.
